Additional Description:

The author, at the time this book was written, was 96 years of age. Because his mind was sharp and he was able to remember, accurately, many details of his youthful days, he painted a revealing picture that described the struggles and strife of many Americans during the early 1900s. The reader will discover that among these pages are descriptions of a world that is completely different from modern life in the twenty-first century. Moreover, in these chapters are chronicled a life that was dedicated to servitude. It all started out in the sticks of Wise county with only an eighth-grade education, and not a very good one at that. From there, Rev. Harper managed, with no money, to forge a path through the halls of academia that would eventually award him a B.A. degree from Texas Christian University-an act of sheer will power. With additional studies at Brite Seminary, he had accumulated enough graduate hours to be ordained into Christian ministry. Rev. Harper, the first of his family to receive a college education, was able to cast a positive influence upon the many people he would meet along his journey. During his service of 53 years as a Texas clergyman, he received two of the highest awards that a congregation could bestow upon a minister, that of Minister Emeritus. In 1980, Rev. Harper was awarded the distinguished title of Small Congregation Minister Of The Year. His many and varied encounters as a public servant has equipped him to be an "attitude doctor," as he would put it. The stories he tells in these pages reflect these experiences and are full of humor as they historically inform the reader about the Way We Were.
